Karl Ernst von Baer (1792–1876)
Karl Ernst von Baer, from the Piibe Manor in Järvamaa, is one of the most renowned natural scientists and physicians in Estonian history, known primarily as the founder of descriptive and comparative embryology. One of his most notable discoveries is the mammalian egg cell. Von Baer’s journey in medical science began at the University of Tartu, where he defended his doctoral thesis on the endemic diseases of Estonians in 1814, followed by further education in Berlin, Vienna, and Würzburg. Throughout different periods of his life, he also engaged in ichthyology, entomology, geography, ethnography, and anthropology alongside embryology and anatomy. The Baer-Babinet law is named after him.
